I was privileged to read an advance copy of Larger than Love, and I could not put it down! Bernard is a gay man in his mid-30s who struggles with his appearance and self-esteem, and has only a few friends with whom he’s really close. Damage from previous relationships have also brought his emotional state down. The support from his family means so much to him, but he wishes he could find a man who would truly love him for who he is.Rory comes from a devout Catholic family, and his controlling mother wants nothing more than for Rory to find a nice girl, get married, and make more grandchildren for her. His religious upbringing reminds Rory that he should be with a woman, but he has not met any that sparked his interest. He also deals with his own self-esteem issues because his mother constantly reminds him that he eats too much and should lose weight (so he’ll be more attractive to the women she insists on introducing to him).Bernard and Rory were friends in high school, but in recent years there has been distance between them. Could their relationship be as deep and true as it was when they were teens? Could it be even more?I was captivated by this book, with a story that resonated with some of my own feelings and experiences. Rooting for Bernard and Rory – as well as the other friends that become their chosen family along the way – is at the heart of this wonderful tale. I can’t wait to learn what happens next!
