Hearts of Magic

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR MY READING PLEASURE ** Copy received through Netgalley~Hearts of Magic (Chevalier #3) by Kay Doherty ★★★★☆ 40k words / Pages POV: 3rd person, dual POVHearts of Magic is a sizzling, action-fuelled addition to the Chevalier story. It has heart, sexy times and a whole lot of sweetness and action to keep the reader interested. The story picks right up where the previous novel left off, as Colby and Theran meet for the first time.I was actually surprised at how quickly this book released, because it doesn’t feel that long ago since I last read book 2. But you won’t find me complaining. I love the storyline, the characters, and the familiarity that comes with reading each new book in the series now.The book is labelled as Asexual, and I was honestly a little apprehensive about that. As an asexual person, I too often see people mislabel or misrepresent asexuality. To my relief, Doherty acknowledges the many facets of asexuality. In this book, Colby is asexual, can enjoy sex, but doesn’t actually get hard or show his arousal in the “typical” or expected ways. And I absolutely FLOVE the gentle, understanding way Theran tries to understand him, his wants, his needs, and provide what he is happy to share within their relationship. Sometimes he doesn’t guess correctly, but Colby is strong enough and aware enough to correct him without getting angry, while Theran tries not to make assumptions and lets Colby guide him. This give-and-take is what makes the relationships within the series so beautiful. They all have this moment, this single-issue, that needs to be navigated and none of them allow miscommunication to override their intelligence and senses. There was a minor inconsistency in that Theran’s surname changed from Curley to Curly. I didn’t understand the Sit, Ubu, sit joke and had to Google it. Add them onto the first chapters and I couldn’t give it 5*. For me, I got a bit lost in the first 2 chapters. It felt like everything was clinical, almost bullet pointed, and didn’t have the flow the rest of the book had. I found myself floundering a little, trying to grasp any kind of connection to Colby within those chapters. Once they passed, the writing cleared up and became more fluid, and I connected to Colby just fine. But the stuttering start meant I had to mark it down a little. As usual with this series, I loved the characters, the chemistry, and the plotting. The pacing was perfect, interspersing the action between the romance and the heat, while keeping the running plot throughout, consistent with the other books in the series. I love that the pack are constantly growing together, as well as becoming confident and strong individuals. As before, there is an extra POV within the main story, and one final POV that introduces the next book’s central character. For this book, Tanner was the bonus POV within the book, though it didn’t appear often, and Ean will be the next book. Both these POV’s had their place and were a nice addition, to flesh out the details and show the events from a new perspective. Thanks to the final chapter – which follows the pattern of all previous books – we know that Ean’s story is next. I’m SO excited for it. But, I won’t lie, I’d also love to see a story where Ross takes the lead. He’s becoming more and more intriguing as time goes on.~Favourite Quotes“For Theran, his mate and the love of his life, Colby was willing to die.”
